Golfing in Wales
Wales is a golfer’s paradise. Mildly undulating landscapes, fields of green grass as far as the eye can see and a temperate climate all make for the perfect golf setting. Not to worry though, the courses aren’t crowded, partly because there are over 200 golf courses in Wales. Golfing in Wales as a holiday unto itself has in fact become so popular that there are travel agencies exclusively booking for golfers in Wales. As an added holiday feature many golf tourists opt for log cabin lodgings near their course of choice and concentrate on improving their handicap in one location, while still enjoying the occasional side trip to other courses for variety.
Based on location, value for money and user friendliness the top 10 courses in Wales are probably:
- Nefyn District Golf Club, Pwllheli, Gwynedd
- Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, Porthcawl, Mid Glamorgan
- Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire
- The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club, Monmouth, Monmouthshire
- Aberdovey Golf Club, Aberdovey, Gwynedd
- Pennard Golf Club, Swansea, West Glamorgan
- Celtic Manor Golf Resort – Ryder Cup 2010, Newport, Gwent
- Tenby Golf Club, Tenby, Pembrokeshire
- Royal St David’s Golf Club, Harlech, Gwynedd
- Coed Y Mwstwr Golf Club, Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan
Glamorgan and Gwynedd
Glamorgan and Gwynedd are clearly two of the hottest golfing spots in Wales. Glamorgan has vast coastlines and mountainous regions with significant plateaus throughout the area. A little further north Gwynedd is more sparsely populated and also enjoys a greater landmass – for golfing of course. The people of both regions are notoriously friendly and also offer a plethora of things to do apart from golf – for those family members who aren’t quite as keen on the game. Of course Gwynedd is also home to Snowdonia National Park, one of the most pristine places to visit in all of the United Kingdom.
